Wrinkles & how to prevent them

Wrinkles are every woman’s worst enemy. Those horrible lines that criss-cross our faces may tell the story of our past but they also reveal just how much past we have! However, there are ways to combat wrinkles that don’t involve a trip to the plastic surgeon or the age-old trick of taping your skin back at night (which really doesn’t work, trust me!).

Moisturising, avoiding over-exposure to sunlight, eating healthily and quitting smoking obviously all helps but we don’t expect you to leave a monastic life. Tackle those wrinkles head-on by treating yourself to regular facial treatments and by using quality skincare products that have been created from ingredients known to help reduce wrinkles, such as Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid, Glucolic Acid and a range of free-radical-fighting anti-oxidants.

What are wrinkles?
To understand how to treat wrinkles, we first have to understand what they are and what causes them. Wrinkles develop when collagen fibres, a protein necessary for healthy skin, break down. To prevent or reduce wrinkles, you therefore need to stimulate collagen production deep within the skin as well as keep collagen-damaging free radicals at bay.

How can we treat wrinkles?
Although to a certain extent collagen breakdown is a natural result of ageing, there are ways that you can slow skin-ageing down. Sun can be one of your skin’s worse enemies, but some sunlight is necessary to ensure we get a healthy dose of Vitamin D. However, more than a few minutes of sun exposure can be incredibly damaging to our skin so slap on the sunblock and wear a hat when you’re outside. Also remember to wear a quality pair of sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around them. Free-radical damage is also caused by smoking, which can be avoided, and pollution, which often can’t be if you live in the city.

Easy ways to smooth the skin include drinking plenty of water to ensure the skin is constantly hydrated, and eating a diet rich in anti-oxidant packed food – fruits, nuts, vegetables and omega 3 fatty acids (found in oily fish, seeds and nuts). Many skincare products now also contain powerful anti-oxidants, and professional beauty treatments use products that are packed with wrinkle-busting ingredients.

In addition to applying powerful products, remember to include facial treatments in your beauty regime. Professional beauty therapists are trained to perform facial massages which are an integral and important component to anti-ageing facial treatments. Not only will massage ensure the beneficial skincare creams and serums reach deeply into the skin, it will tighten facial muscles and improve circulation.

Wrinkles may be inevitable as we age but by combining a healthy diet, plenty of water, regular facials and avoiding too much sun exposure, they can be minimised for smoother, younger looking skin.
