How to prepare your skin for waxing

Getting your legs or bikini line waxed isn’t as simple as just letting your hair grow long enough and then calling for your next appointment! You could do that but to reduce pain or those nasty ingrown hairs, there are a few things you can do before your next appointment to make things more comfortable for both you and your therapist.

Don’t leave too long between appointments
You should allow between three and four weeks between waxes. Hair should be at least ½ centimetre long for the wax to be work effectively. But leave it too long and the wax could be more painful. If your hair is longer than ½-1 centimetre, try to trim it before your wax to make things more comfortable. Lastly, if you can avoid it, try not to shave between wax appointments. It’s best to let the hair grow out for the full 3-4 weeks.

Clean, dry skin is best
Wax will adhere better to skin that is clean and dry making your hair removal more effective. Remove any lotions or oils using a wipe or even baby powder. You should also avoid any harsh cleansers in the 24 hours prior to your wax and this includes peels (glycolic or AHA) and microdermabrasion.

After-wax care
To keep your skin looking its best for longer there are a few things you can do immediately after a wax so your next appointment runs smoothly. Keep freshly-waxed skin away from super-hot showers or bath for 24-48 hours post wax to avoid irritation. It’s also best to avoid sunbaking or tanning as well. If, after your wax, your skin is red and irritated use a cream containing aloe vera or hydrocortisone to calm the area. Lastly, steer clear of exfoliation in the 48 hours after a wax but make sure you regularly exfoliate in the lead-up to your next appointment to avoid ingrown hairs.
